    Filming a car scene?

It all depends on your budget and the actual ability of your talents to actually drive. An alternate and cheaper option, if they can drive, is to grip the camera on the hood or the doors, as to get different camera positions, apart from the inside positions you can easily achieve. A limped and...

    film stock shootout

Apart from the question "Kodak or Fuji ?", wich, I think, is meaningless considering your questions, I would say the following : - Even if stock has made a lot of progress, you always have more grain and less contrast with high speed stock than loww sensitivity ones, go for 500 EI if you want...

    Assistant Camera Question

If there is no hook, make one during the camera tests. You can use Sticky Velcro, for instance, one part on the tape measure, one part on the camera body. Usually, there is a sign on it to show where to meter from. (it's an "O" with a vertical line on it). But that's weird there is no hook on...

(Continuing) The whole team decided to quit this site for different reasons, actually, and we're setting up a new site with the french association of cinematographers, the AFC and we now are at ten days of its official launching so I'm very busy at it at the moment, as a root admin, as you can...

Hi Kim, Yes I've been very busy this last year, wich is good on some point and less on some others, so I didn't turn out here much, that's right, just as I did not visit cinematography.com as much as I used to do. May be you remember that I was in the admin/moderating team of a french site...

    The right gels

Well, you can bring what you have, but when ther is a need... Another way to do it is ask him to pay some other expenses instead, like petrol or anything, that he wouldnt have paid for otherwise, that you actually use for some gels...

    The right gels

Usually the production pays for the gels as well as used bulbs, gaffer tape, batteries etc. Even on a very low cost production, they pay the sandwiches and the gels... As to find out what is cheaper, you should compare dealers, whatever trademarks, better than marks themselves, I think.

    Timelapse on an Arri SR2

An intervalometer. There is a "cinematography" box that you can link to the camera, that does the job well.

Is conversion from HD video to Film Possible?

Makes me think... When I said "HD is the best video format anyway", I was forgetting that you mentionned the HD 100. It's not the best of HD cameras. From far... So may be it would be worth considering some better HD system for transfering to 35 mm... And mind that you should use a process (24p...

    white balancing

OK... No, I'm sorry to say this is not a good advice. You can't just say "if you have a wrong balance, add some magenta", it's like if someone would say "I'm not sure the meal will be fine" and you would advice "add some salt ! " even though you don't know what was cooked ! If your balance is...

    white balancing

It's not the problem of understanding what you wrote (thanks for putting it another way BTW) but... I must be missing something, you are aware english is not my native language - why the heck do you want to add magenta on an image you know nothing about ????

French New wave, Tirez sur le pianiste(1960) Formal Analysis

Sorry, I didn't read all of it and I reckon I should, I may have some opinion on your paper, since you're analysing a french film, but, and I'm sorry to point something out about english grammar but, should not be written "follow" instead of "fallow" ? Regards,

    Lighting A Church

One thing you can do as a test is take a digital still camera and use the preset white balance options. Shoot in daylight with the white balance set on 3200 tungsten. You could as well make the same test with a video camera, but if these media won't behave exactly like film does, I think a...

    Lighting A Church

Well, if you shoot tungsten stock with daylight coming through the window, that light will look very blue. How bad ? I can't answer. There is no such scale as the Richter's scale... Using daylight stock sounds a good choice. If you think an alternative to 200 Vision 2 can be the Fuji stock you...

    Lighting A Church

Sure you'll lose a bit of blue from the mentionned windows, but CTBing your tungsten sources will lower them with a factor of 4 ! (2 stops loss). Meaning a 2kW will only give the power a 500W would. Since you have daylight coming through the windows, the 3 possibilities are - Use daylight...

    white balancing

I don't think it's use to do it at every shot. And might even be a wrong thing in some cases. I just do it every time the keylight setup is different.
