what camera to get with a budget of 1000 dollars.????

I am about to buy a camcorder with a budget of 1000 dollars.
Can you guys tell me which one can be the best bang for the bucks!
is the pv-gs500 any good.
I want to get it to start shooting little short movies.
just to amaze myself and maybe my friends.
