so...
with the crazy popularity of sites like youtube etc., do you feel like everyone thinks they are a filmmaker?

just wondering...:)

That's the million dollar question, isn't it?

I try to encourage anyone who has an interest to make a movie and learn how to do it well. Yet I get very disappointed by how much crap there is out there, and not just on Youtube.

What Youtube does is give everyone a somewhat equal chance of being seen. Your question, I think, is a problem. As one of my favorite directors, Robert Rodriguez, said (and I'm paraphrasing) once you decide to make a movie, you're a filmmaker. The real question is, are you a good one?

My issue with Youtube and flash video in general is that it tends to look horrible. It is becoming harder and harder to find decent looking video clips online (i.e. music videos, as many bands put them up as flv files rather than a less compressed format).

Hi, this is my first post, but I thought I would post on this topic! Seems like a good first post.

I agree with the above post. I have tried to upload several films and vlogs up on YouTube as production journals, but the quality really goes down. It's a shame that there aren't any sites (that I know of) that allow you up upload in compressed video that would allow for higher quality.

Image quality isn't really what the original poster was talking about (If I'm wrong, correct me). While yes, Youtube's quality sucks, I think addicted135 is talking about the quality of the content.

Not specifically image quality, but the topic was ones thoughts on the rising popularity of Youtube.

My thoughts are that I think it is unfortunate that so much content (regardless of how good the content is) will be archived in the future in such a low quality.

I would have to say that It does annoy me that the image quality has to be so bad. I put my video up there and it does make me cringe when i think about it because all I can think is that I'm letting myself down a bit by letting people see such a bad version. :( ah well

I've had good luck with the quality of ourmedia.org, the servers are slow, sometimes prohibitively. But Ourmedia has no size limit on uploads and allows you some freedom with the type of copyright you want.
