Mr. Laszlo,

In my studies of lighting/cinematography, I have run across the term "cheating" in regards to light sources and uses of light in the frame.

I am reading your book and was amazed upon the second viewing of the scene to see the "Park Lamps" that you added to provide light. As you pointed out in the book, I didn't even question the fact that I have never seen those lamps in a cemetery when I watched that scene.

Is this a form of "cheating"?

Could you expand upon your definition of cheating and when/where it is appropriate?

Thank you for your time.

While I never used the word "cheating" applied to lighting in an unorthodox manner, I would say that "cheating" might be appropriot whenever there is no other way to ight a shot. But it will only work if it is done in a manner so it is not seen. My movie, The Worriors is full of these kinds of lighting examples. Look at any scene photographed under the "El" structure, analyze it, and you will see dozens of lioghts that don't belong where they are.

Good luck.
