Silent Film Composing

Composers:
I have been composing silent films for the last few years. One of them, "The Scalpel" (I also produced) is in a ton of festivals is currently in 81 festivals and has won 91 awards/nominations (including 24 score awards!). I encourage composers to look into working on silent films. They are a tremendous way to learn about scoring. I own the film estate of this film (and others by the filmmaker) but you can find public domain films (https://archive.org/ - films before 1928 although you should always check with the Library of Congress first).
Working on a silent film is a blessing and a curse. You don't have a filmmaker available to help point you in a direction. You also don't have to work underneath the dialog. The music may also act as dialog, sound effects, atmosphere, emotion, and pacing. It can be tremendously rewarding and can make quite a demo (see the backstory link!)
You can always contact me via my website. I will be at some of these upcoming events. (Glendale FF in CA, late Sept 2024 will screen all three of these films. See you there!
