Newbie Set Designer

Hi all, I have been asked to be set designer for a shoestring feature being produced locally. I have very little film or theater experience so I was hoping to draw on your accumulated knowladge. Any one have any tips or tricks to designing interesting sets that enhance the narrative without being obvious? Any pitfalls to watch out for? What did you wish you knew before working on your first feature?

I'm just looking for things that will get me thinking down the right paths. I'm smart enough to know that I don't know enough to know what I don't know. Know what I mean?
