While recently compressing a movie (http://www.studentfilmmakersforums.com/chimeralighting/article_783.shtml) to submit to the Chimera Shorts Festival I had major trouble figuring out which codec to compress my movie with...

Every book I've come across has suggested compressing to mpeg-1 (mpg) or real media (.rm) in order to reach the most viewers. Unfortunately, my software (compressor & final cut pro) offers NEITHER codec so I ended up doing a Sorenson 3/.mov compression that left me with a huge ass file but the quality is outstanding. Anyone know if I can download either of those codecs I mentioned above for FREE somewhere?

At some point I'd like to invest in a piece of software that can do it ALL, but I'm guessing that's not available yet? Anyone have any other recommendations? I have not been impressed with .mp4 or .avi; both of these seem to be pretty "trashy" when it comes to image quality.

Anyone have any suggestions for books I can pick up on this subject? I've yet to come across any really good explanations of what all these codecs do and which one to use with what...that would be a nice page to have listed somewhere else on this website!
