well it's a black and white film, and it's been roughly a decade since a new release of a much more refined emulsion of B&W Kodak negative stock (though Stranger Than Paradise looks like reversal), and either way they havent had many advancements in the B&W realm, so you're fine if you use today's stocks, try flashing the film too.

I think plus-X will give you what you are looking for. However the 100 ASA rating may scare you off. The Tri-X at 200 ASA might give you that look as well.

There are a couple of black and white short sequences from a Super-8 film I DP'd that you can study to see if it is matching the look you are going for.
Go to www.dalidalidali.com and browse around as there are about 7 or 8 short clips in total, and many of them have black and white in them.

Despite the fact that the IMDB says the movie was shot in 16mm and blown-up, the March 1985 issue of American Cinematographer says it was shot in "grainy 35mm" using an Arri-35BL (you can see a photo of the DP using one), mainly with just an 18mm and 25mm lens. Doesn't say which stock but I would guess Double-X B&W Negative 5222, maybe even forced-processed.

If you are using a smaller film format, you may wish to compensate by using a slower-speed b&w film.
