i dont know the legalities of making a music video but from what ive heard its ok to proceed without the consent of the artist as long as the film doesnt make a profit. i just want to double check with you guys and see if that really is the case.
so here is the concept. its a music video for save yourself by stabbing westward. much of the action cues with the guitar rifts which is what makes this video cool. however, a lot of the material is too strong to be aired so i categorize this project as an independent short film. the story is of a soldier believed to be on a rescue mission. his goal: save the presidents twelve year old daughter. however, the key word is believed. the action used in the video is supposed to pay homage to the greatest action movies and video games of recent times. the matrix, max payne, mission impossible, metal gear solid, die hard, black, equilibrium, etc. i think its a cool idea incorporating all the famous action scenes we love into one video with a fresh character. so here goes:
helicopter viewpoint. nightime and raining. a soldier attached to a cable scales the side of a large skyscraper. unattaches cable. sprints to the center of the rooftop and kneels before a skylight. reattaches cable to nearby protruding pipe. next to the skylight is a large black case. opens case containing an assortment of weapons and ammunition. locks and loads the guns and straps them to his body. just before the first guitar rift, he pulls out a picture of a little girl playing with the president on the whitehouse lawn. zoom in on soldiers face. sighs heavily and just as the first guitar rift hits, he pulls out duel uzis and shatters the skylight hes standing on with gunfire. pulls a mission impossible and lays stomach flat one foot from the ground only this time our hero lays waste to a handful of surprised masked (and heavily armed) soldiers. from here on out ill call our soldier "hero" as to not confuse him with the enemy soldiers hes fighting. when his clips empty, hero unhooks his cable and rolls behind a load bearing pillar. he can easily reload his uzi clips because they are all attached down the length of his legs. just a slap on either side and he can fire from his hip.
this is getting rather lengthy so ill speed things up a bit.
there are four distinct rooms. the first room has a lot of pillars ideal for shoot and scoot warfare (black). the second is a large office where our hero shoots out a power generator and the majority of the scenes are lit with muzzleflash (equilibrium). but when the enemy soldiers reboot the power, our hero is caught offguard and gets smashed over the head with the butt of a rifle. this is where the music slows down. when he comes to, our hero is stripped naked and handcuffed to a chair in a small interrogation room. his interrogator does awful things to him. he breaks his fingers, punches him in the tesicles, cuts his face with a knife...sadistict things. but our hero catches a break when the interrogator steps aside to take a call on his walkie talkie. hero manages to get up from the chair but cant get the handcuffs off. he sneaks up behind the interrogator and stangles him with the handcuff chains. right before the music picks up again, he looks at the fallen walkie talkie. his facial expression lets us know something is about to happen. just as another rift hits, hero whips the dead body towards the door. three soldiers bust through the door and rain down a hellfire of bullets...but every bullet is sucked up by the human shield. hero drops to his knees and pulls out his dead shields sidearms and takes down the three soldiers. cautiously he keeps his guns drawn as he searches the fourth room. when its all clear, hero tosses one gun and drags a dead body up to a glass wall. behind the wall is where the presidents daughter is being held. hero uses the dead soldiers fingerprints to open up the security door. he walks inside the holding cell and stands about 5 feet away from the girl in a profile shot that captures both onscreen. oddly there is no emotion from either for several seconds. finally, hero grins, raises his gun and shoots the little girl in the forhead as the song ends. the final scene is of the photo of the little girl in the beginning after the music has ended. the picture floats amongst the ashes (i will incorporate some type of explosion in the first room). it flips rapidly towards the ground. however, we notice something written on the back of the photo but cant make it out because it is spinning too fast. the spinning slows until we can make out the word "target" on the back. as soon as the audience can read that word the photo catches fire and burns to ash before it ever hits the gound.
our "hero" was in fact a mercenary hired to assassinate the presidents daughter. the enemy soldiers were cia agents ordered by the president to protect his daughter. ive seen movies where we root for the bad guy because we like him but i dont recall ever seeing one where we root for the bad guy because all along we think he is good. there is no such thing as an original idea so its probably been done before already. i still like my story though.
i realize this would cost a ton if filmed live action so ive decided to go the animation route. i originally had scenes incorporating a much more in depth story that was a bit different from the one you just read but after speaking with some people who know about animation, they advised to make it as short as possible. the original was around eight minutes and this version is ten seconds longer than the song (4:20). i wanted to go the 3d animation route but i found that is much more costly than 2d so i think ill do it 2d.
any thoughts or comments?
