You could look into Hallogen work lights from Home Depot. They are pretty inexpensive, and if you use them properly, can get great results. Just be careful because they can get really hot.
Combine that with some PVC and other DIY softboxes, reflectors, flags, etc, and you could get yourself a pretty extensive light kit for only a couple hundred bucks (as opposed to a few thousands for pro gear).
If you still want to look at pro gear, you could check out eBay and also B&H (They sometimes sell used stuff).
