Thank you! I appreciate that. I definitely remember you as well. This community was really my first exposure to filmmaking, a place where I could ask questions, discuss film, and learn. It's amazing how the community and website have grown. Congratulations!

    50mm is not popular?

I'm going to make some clarifications, because there were some factual inaccuracies in the second response by Scoffy3214 A 50mm lens roughly sees the same information that you see if one eye is closed. This lens is neither considered a wide angle, nor telephoto. it is the dividing line between...

Permission for making films at High School

You're dealing with minors, so it would be HIGHLY recommended, although if it wouldn't be going any further than youtube or home enterainment you probably have nothing to worry about. I shot a documentary in a middle school, and I got release forms for the kdis that talked in the film, all the...

16mm film is (almost) all black

It depends what kind of film you were using, but underexposure would explain it most easily. I've shot on the BL many times. And if it's your first time shooting film, it needs A LOT more light than digital. A 250w floodlight wouldn't see much unless it was pointed directly at the subject, and...

Do the big studio still shoot film?

Most feature films are shot on film still. The television industry is shifting to digital though. At this point, I think it's difficult to convince the producers to allow for shooting film-although its not exlcusive yet.

    lighting under fluorescent lights

Or if you're shooting digitally, you can simply white balance the camera to the flourescent lights to remove the green.

    Sony HDV VTR Problems

If you don't have your settings right in FCP and try to import, it will not be right and you will encounter problems. Aside from that, unless you were using a high quality external microphone, the audio will most likely not be very good from just the GL2. Also the, GL2 only records basic SD...

'Pi Look' How can i achieve this

It was shot on high contrast black and white reversal film. With an xl-2 i have no idea if its possible to achieve that exact "look". You'd be better off using that look as a spring board for your own look, since that look is most likely unachievable. The reason for this, lies in the fundamental...

    Best Camera For Audio

None. If you're referring to the microphone quality. Cameras audio capturing techniques are pretty much afterthoughts. The best you can do is to get a camera that has XLR inputs and get a high quality mic from Sennheiser, Audio Technica, or Azden.

    Videography and Cinematography

Technically speaking that is probably correct. I tend to think of Cinematography and Videography more a difference of process, whether or not that's correct or not. The fact of the matter, is that people who film weddings and events tend to call themselves "videographers", and those who tend to...

Moving over to 16mm - Need Advice

I know this is rather late, but I just want to throw out there to others thinking about buying a 16mm camera, that unless you have unlimited funds: Don't. Why? Firstly, film is slowly being phased out, so the demand for renting such a camera (if you wanted to make some of your money back) is...

Shoot B/W 16mm of a projected video image?

You shouldn't have a problem. I've shot projected images before on film. I don't know the exact number, but you'd want to avoid shooting at high frame rights to avoid flicker. Not that you'll have that problem on a bolex. Assuming you're shooting at 24fps. It'll show up if you expose it correctly.

    why you adjust the lights

It is very common in shooting to begin with wide shots, and move in for closer shots. And in this process it is common to making subtle (or sometimes more extreme) lighting changes. Now, rule #1 is always to light spaces, not people. That is to say that when lighting, logical sources should...

    Lighting question

I´m sorry, but it is impossible to answer this question. Why? Most people have this idea that there´s some kind of formula in order for a movie to look good. A formula for good cinematography. Good camera. Good lights. Whatever that stuff means you know. The truth is that it´s all about the...
