    What genre do you prefer?

I go for what I term the "Thinking" comedy. A comedy that makes you laugh but can make you think as well. Kevin Smith's Clerk's is an interesting example of that.

    Whats a good start?

Also a good thing that I've found helps. Depending on what type of movie/director/editor/whatever that you want to get into/do is to go to your local video store and rent a shit load of videos in that genre/by that director/whatever. And take lots of notes on pacing, editing, etc. You may not be...

    production companies?

There are actors, they're called friends and family. They don't have to be pros. If you look around the boards here somewhere, there is some advice on how to direct non-actors. And as for locations, work on it man work on it.

    iMac for editing vs. PC

I'd lean towards Mac's as they're predisposition is towards this thing. PC's may have the software, etc. but Mac's where built and designed with this sorta thing in mind. But that's just mho.

    Need Advice (Houston, Texas)

Where to specialize? It depends on what kind of director you want to be. If you're visual go for cameras and lenses, if you're more of a sound dude, then go for the sound. Experiment with what you have and see what happens. Test out what you can and can't do with what you have before you start...

It could be done. Though it would probably have to be very well done.

Need recommendations for camera for big rig documentary

The general consensus is to NOT use tripods if your doing an indie film or doco as they take up to much time and ebergy to set up/take down. Which can effect time and budget in doing so. Thats my 2 cents on that. Might add a bit more as I go.
