I just got this from wikipedia.org site. "The Writers Guild has indicated their industrial action would be a "marathon". AMPTP negotiator Nick Counter has indicated negotiations would not resume as long as strike action continues, stating, "We're not going to negotiate with a gun to our heads—that's just stupid.""

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? What would happen if they just keep striking for a year? I hope they don't but if nothing is going to move until they stop and they won't stop do you think other non union writers might start filling spots here and there??

Yes, I think non-union writers will start filling in if the strike keeps dragging on much longer. Indeed new writers will see this as an occasion to get their work recognized. Of course, it will still have to be quality work, but there are always new people who would love making it in Hollywood.

Either that, or more movies will go the indie route, bypassing Hollywood altogether. So, in a way, it is opportunity knocking loud and clear.

WORK IT OUT

I think that there is a great deal of un-recognized talent in the world today. When we started the magazine I noticed that some of the writers that have been paid well and in the business for a long while were not as sharp as some of the writers submitting work for the first time to a magazine. I think sometimes union’s get the workers entrenched in a way and it does not always produce the most excellent works. I am not saying there are not many talented writers but just because you belong to the Writers Guild and have a job in the entertainment industry does not mean you are gifted writers. However I do know some very talented hardworking gifted people that are not working now because of the strike. I hope it is over soon. It is actually hurting us too because companies are not spending as much money on advertising at this time. I can see that the studios can’t predict yet what the sales on the internet will be or how much it will cost them to build the backend and set up the processes and marketing to make it profitable. I hope it gets worked out soon. I think most people will be on the Writers Guild side in regards to getting paid for the internet distribution. Come on, the internet distribution is exploding everyone is scrambling to sell or rent downloadable DVDs next year with deals on all levels all across the board being signed or negotiated with I-tunes, Amazon and some new upsatarts i am not famliair with. I understand that people need to be treated fairly but sometimes they might hurt the business.
