Hi Mister Mullen,
I've been wondering for a while now, what are the chances of someone from the US, UK, or one of the bigger film industries doing a workshop for filmmakers in South Africa? I've tried looking for opportunities online to try to get to some workshops, but they're all abroad, and I really cannot afford an overseas trip. The only local opportunities that we have are through the locally-sponsored "DV8" initiative. However, they only offer workshops to people who are currently involved in one of their productions as writer or director, and they only accept three scripts a year for production, which leaves the rest of us in a bit of a jam as far as teaching is concerned. I'm not necessarily directing this towards you specifically, but what do we have to do to get some international attention for our local market?

Well, the question is do you have any filmmaking organizations (unions, films schools, film societies, etc.) that would organize and pay for a visiting U.S. cinematographer?

You also get the occasional Hollywood film down there -- Roger Deakins was there shooting "Levity" a few years back, right? -- that would be an opportunity to arrange a lecture or something.

Thanks for the quick response. It would be ideal to try to get someone who's visiting the country on a shoot to come and do a lecture or something with us, if we can try to find out when and where someone's going to be shooting here (Hollywood productions have been notoriously secretive in the past when they come here to shoot - we normally only find out that they were here when the shoot's already done, maybe they're trying to avoid too much publicity while they're shooting).

I know what you mean, I'm always missing shootings. I only find out they were here after they're gone. It drives me crazy!!
