hi Guys,

I've been deliberating for about a month on which camera to purchase, I have a budget of no more than $2000 for the camera.

One decision i have firmly made is that i do not require HD capabilities at this stage as i am at a point which i think is lower than Student :?

Two cameras i've looked at which seem ok are the Sony VX2100 or the XM2 from canon - the FX1E would be great, but it goes too far over budget - should i save and wait to purchase a HD capable model anyway? or just get into the SD stuff now and get better before going up to HD when my requirements and knowledge have advanced? (that is probably a self answerable question :) )

I plan to do mainly family stuff and also the odd surfing video to document the trips we go on every year - so more of a documentary kind of movie making - although i have no entirely ruled out a story for one of the surf videos to accompany the beautiful scenery.

water housings (10m capacity) go for about $1500 or so - so i need to factor that into the budget as well.

I would suggest checking out the Panasonic DVC30, i was recently in the same argument with myself between the gl2, and the vx2100, the VX went over my budget (2k) and as much as i tried to stretch it, i found the DVC30 and from what i found, it works better in lower light conditions than the GL2, but not as well as the VX, i havent seen as many problems with it from forums opposed to GL2 (tape mechanism specifically,).

what i personally was debating over, after finnaly deciding not to get the gl2, was the price. the dvc30 was roughly 1.8k (plus tax for me in NY) vs the 2200 of the vx. The dvc30 would indeed require a better microphone imo. but with the extra money, i plan to purchas a rode videomic. it also has a IR mode, which works pretty well.
i personally enjoy my camera a lot and am satisfied. but i wuld assume, gettin any of these cameras new, would provide for a satisfying feeling. :)

So does that mean you're looking for a $500 camera? Or is one of those numbers wrong?

if the budget for the camera is about $2000 i would save a little extra and aim for a DVX 100
