Smoke for Defined Beams

Now I know to get defined beams of light to use a smoke or fog machine but is there any other way? I've been experimenting with flour and powder but the look just isn't the same. Any ideas?

Careful. A suspension of flour or grain dust in the air can be explosive. JimT

The easiest is still just a smoke or fog machine. Humidifiers don't create a thick enough discharge to block or refract light and if/when they do you are talking about a serious build up of water which will damage your set and equipment. Grains just as Jim said will explode, that's why grain elevators blow up. Stick with fog and smoke, you don't want to be inhaling grain or other weird things anyway.

Just use a smoke machine -- it will be safer to breathe than suspending any particulate matter in the air.
