Smoke Effects

Hi, I am trying to create some smoke effects, two different types

1) I would like to create smoke coming from inside a person's clothing, coming up like through a hoodie... but I want to be safe

2) I am also wanting to create some smoke bodies can move in and out of, maybe a medium amount of smoke.

I don't have really the budget to buy a machine. I was wondering if there are other ways to do this... and maybe places to buy the stuff.

I appreciate any help/advice, hope I'm clearly explaining myself here.

You can often rent smoke machines; I've never used one myself, so I'm not sure how safe the smoke is that close to actors.

One low-budget fantasy feature I worked on was perpetually smoky due to using burning torches for lighting, but I think that's best avoided .

run a hose from the end up through the clothes and watch it smoke... I HIGHLY doubt it woudl cause serious injury to the smoker... Best to test it first though.

You can also use the screening option that a lot of editors have and just layer in smoke effects over your footage. Detonationfilms.com has lots of free footage you can use for that.
