Does anyone have experience shooting documentaries or covering live events.. I've done mostly narrative shorts, so obtaining appearance releases for documentaries is new to me.
I want to shoot a live sports event and interview several competitors, judges, and spectators on-the-spot. I know a lot of people will be turned off when I tell them to sign this 2 page release first before we do the interview.
I'd like to know how other filmmakers have handled obtaining documentary releases? What is the best way to do on-the-spot interviews of people at a live sports event? Is it best to just do the interview, and then have them read and sign your release form, and if they don't have time then scrap that clip? Or is it better to ask for their signature before hand and risk losing the interview?
Or, are the laws for appearances in a documentary less strict than a narrative piece?
