quitting FCP and trashing external hard drive

I regularly use FCP and recently am having problems trashing my external hard drive. Though I have quit FCP the computer keeps saying that it is still in use and doesn't allow me to trash the HD. Also today FCP refused to quit and I had to force quit twice before it finally shut down.

Any suggestions about what I could do.

You should trash FCP preferences. The best way to do that is to use FCPrescue free software.
