My first real production, what do i need?

Hello thanks for taking your time to help me... i have been in TV productions my past 6 years of my life now 18.. All productions i was in were school based.. with many years of experience i want to do more.. therefore finding what i need, to start. my first production right now is a working script, taking in notice that to shoot the movie iam going to need permits and licencesing,. My first question would be what do i realy need permits and licensing for? Am i able to shoot a movie with none of the above. My team is a small crew... yet with still no production company (SWI). This is my last year of High School and hoping to get in a bigger field of filming and Tv productions when i lieve of to college. Thank you for your time.

Well, you need permits if you're going to shoot in a public place, or on someone's property. If a cop shows up (or the rightful owner) they can boot you out, as you are technically a hazard. (If a pedestrian trips over your tripod, they might sue the property owner!)

If you're shooting in a private area (your own home) I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're using a ton of equipment (like a grip truck). Then, that's going to catch someone's attention...

(Realistically though, if you're shooting in a forest somewhere or some unobtrusive alleyway and not disturbing the peace, you should be okay. I did this for a feature I shot a few months ago. Either I was on private property, or was very quiet.)

Licensing is for using music. If you plan to show your movie and charge admission, you'd better have acquired a license to use any music that's in it, or prepare to get sued or at least receive a "cease & desist" order from a lawyer. Unless you're getting a composer to write an original score for your movie, licensing is important. If you're not planning on making any money with this film, you're in a safer area. (If money changes hands, the rightful owners will want their share!)

If anyone else can better explain this, please do- I think I was a bit general in my explanations... :)

No I think you covered it basically about the rights and everything. You need permission from record labels if you use music that is copyrighted, etc. etc. It's a shame, because it seems like everyone is out for money, and filmmaking has kinda lost it's beauty and art due to money hungry buggars (not mentioning any names). Anyway, yeah just be positive, and be sure you don't make the mistake I've made majoring in mass communications instead of filmmaking, which I kinda had to do.

Anyway, make sure you go to a good filmmaking school like Florida State, or NYU, or USC which is awesome, I had a summer course in film production there this past summer. Check it out if you can.
