Music in Documentary

Just a few quick questions. I am looking at shooting a doc which takes place mostly in Bars. Now my question is, what happens with regards to all the music in the background? What if there is loud music playing which is copyrighted? Do I have to pay for use for each song? I have heard if it is for festival use only you may be able to get around some of these issues? Anyone have any advice?

Typically, if the sound is natural and you did not add it in, it can be considered (for docs) to be just a part of the scene you are in. Now, I'm not a lawyer, but that's what I would say. Of course, I would also suggest asking a lawyer, as well.

Clearing Music

Clearing Music

I have some experience with this and in most cases, you will need to clear the songs playing in the background IF they are actually audible.

yeah, If you plan on getting any distribution on this doc you definitely will need to have all music (that is audible) cleared beforehand.
