HDV VTR

Okay, I'm looking at the Sony HVR-M15U for transfers to FCP from stuff shot on a Canon XH-A1. The reason I put one of these in the budget was so I could save the heads of the cameras and all that good stuff.

My questions are:
1.) Will I be able to output the signal thru the VTR to an HD TV Monitor for CC-ing? I think yes, just want to make sure.
2.) If I shoot in Canon's 1080i24f mode, will this machine recognize it for capture/playback? Or will it only play back 1080i/60f?

I haven't tried it myself, but since Sony and Canon decided to use not terribly compatible HDV variants I'm not sure that the Sony deck will play Canon tapes.

Probably the second greatest drawback of HDV is that it's not very compatible between manufacturers; I'm not sure how they managed to create a 'standard' which isn't standard!

i just got out of a live support chat with a rep from B&H.

He said that the Sony VTR will play and transfer the HDV signal (1080i30 and 24f) with no problem.

HDV colorgrading

HDV colorgrading

jsut a warning, you cant output HDV realtime using firewire like you could DV. it takes too much system resources so there is no real time output for colorgrading using firewire. might want to look at one of those cheap HDMI output cards for output to monitor.

that is, unless the new FCP studio fixes this.
