Doing camera tests

I just got a new camera (Arri BL) and it came with 17 filters, UV, ND, Polarizing, Fog, Black Pro-Mist, etc. I was wondering, when you start a project, or begin working with new cameras, film, filters, whatever, what is your process for testing these kinds of things?

It can take too long to test every possible combination of things.

When I start a movie, I like to shoot some basic over and underexposure tests and lighting ratios, just to get a feel for the stock again.

Then I'll try some likely shooting scenarios, styles, with some variations -- like if I plan on using some diffusion, I'll test a range of similar filters.

I'll also test any special processes, if there are any.
