Hi.
I'm a real newbie at movie making. I'm taking a videp producing course at school and the instructor requested from me a one page written editing concept about a film called "symphony of my city". he explains it as " how would you describe the world of your city with pics, sounds, talking, music and examples in film history: "berlin, symphony of the city", roma (fellini), the man with the movie camera"...

I have some ideas and a story for the film, but i can't understand the word "written editing concept".
can you show me an example of an writing editting concept? or explain it to me, how to write it?

I can build a timetable-storyboard like the non-linear editing programs easily, but i can't understand what the instructor with "written concept" want.

please help me. it's important.

I've never heard of the term. I guess he's basically asking you to describe how you would edit that kind of film?

I think he's talking about stuff like

CUT TO: EXT. BUILDING, DAY

Birds scatter, then SPLITSCREEN, birds against building on right, bird against clouds on left.

CUT TO: EXT. AIRPORT DAY

Montage of planes taking off.

This actually is a regular part of serious movie making. You need to learn to put your editing concepts in writing first, or no one will give you a million dollars to make the movie that is "inside my head." It's a great exercise to develop a skill you REALLY will need.

Think of it as a Mission Statement, or Editing Summary. You have to get what is in your head onto paper, or you'll not last long in the film industry.

Yes, this skill is something you will want to cultivate and prune so it ripens. The fruit of your labors will be the ambrosia of the gods. Sorry, a bit dramatic there.
I do this all the time. You strat with an idea, then build on it. See it in your mind, then put EVERYTHING you see on paper. How blue is the sky? What did he do to her exactly? Be very specific. Good luck.
