Adaption Practice

I'm thinking about writing an adaption of Tomb Raider 2013 - for practice. Do you guys think its a good idea or would I be wasting my time?

If I had the time to do something like that I would invest it in something that has not been done that I could use for my own production or sell, barter or trade. Why not write something fresh. If you like those kinds of Tomb Raider things come up with your own characters and create an adventure with all the turning points in it you need for a good feature.
