I am composer and producer of "The Scalpel," a 1936 never-released short horror film by a then 19-year-old filmmaker in Seattle. What Richard Lyford was able to make in his teens with 16mm film is an inspiration to all filmmakers. I have been working on his films for the last 7 years. "The Scalpel" is now in film festivals (over 50 festivals and over 60 awards/nominations).
If you are interested in seeing this film it will be in a number of cities including Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, Tacoma, Renton, LA, Glendale, San Diego, NYC, etc.
A previous 1937 silent sci-fi film, "As the Earth Turns" is on Amazon, Tubi, etc. It was featured on TCM a few years ago. As you can see, these films have won 100s of awards and nominations.
I also created a short mini-doc about Lyford that will be in a special presentation at the Glendale Film Festival, Sunday, Sept 29, 2024, along with all of these films.
I encourage all filmmakers, especially new folks to see these films. Lyford experimented with double exposures, FX, make-up, costumes, miniatures, etc. He wrote 58 stage/screenplays and made 9 films before he was 20. He then went to Disney and eventually directed an Academy Award-winning film.
I have learned a lot about film preservation, editing, restoration, distribution, festival submission, DCPs, theatrical presentation (4-Walling) promotion, etc. I've even entered a film in the Oscars!
Please see these websites for updates, including festivals, awards, screenings, trailers, reviews, etc.
The Links menu has articles about music licensing, hiring a composer, festival submission, and resources for composers/songwriters and filmmakers.
I hope to see you at a future screening! Please feel free to email me with any questions about film or music.
Thanks,
Ed Hartman
