Any recommendations for a free editing software? My adobe trial is coming to an end and I can not afford to pay for it monthly. I have tried light works but really didn't enjoy working with it.

I'm new to editing and am a bit confused about syncing audio to video. If I was to record audio on an audio recorder connected to a shotgun microphone, would I have to sync it up to the video before I start editing or would I sync it on the timeline in my editing software?
