Editing conversations between characters

I am a beginner filmmaker and have just started to learn editing. I understand how to film a conversation between two people. For example, film the whole scene in a master shot and then film the whole scene with OTS shots for each character. However, I don't understand how you edit the footage once it has been filmed. Do you import the footage to the editing software and then split the footage up every time a character finished their line? Do you open the footage, cut it to the bit you want and then import that same footage again but this time cut it to the next bit? I struggle with editing at the moment and can't find any answers. A detailed step by step answer would be appreciated.

hi there, there are really 2 different issues here
learning to use the software, and organize the film and
how to tell your story in editing
I would clearly recommend you edit in final cut pro x
it is the easiest to learn and most effective
there is a great tutorial that will cover both of these issues from ripple training
it is not free but not expensive

good luck
