winter pics

I read in a few articles that warming filters should be used when taking winter pics. Im wondering how else you can get better lighting in pictures that are pretty white. Here are a few pics I took today of dog sled races going on and I am not sure what to do in manual to get better quality. I have lots of winter options for photography since our winter here is really long and I want to figure out some things to try in the future. Any suggestions.

Notice how there is no detail in the ice? How would I go about getting details in ice sculptures from far? Is there a way?530307_10150672669154279_527144278_9530315_321309824_n.jpg

These were cool but I took 700 pictures just to get 4 or 5 good ones. And I wonder about how they could be better. More bright with the color of the dogs and maybe less white. Any ideas?
