Why I Joined

Hi guys
This might not be the first time this happened here but, I happen to still be in Middle School

I plan on being a film director in the coming years and I wanna know where to start, should I make a simple short film first, getting to know people I can work with, etc?

Starting young! Awesome. I would definitely say start with a short. If you really want to up your game I would recommend trying to make 30 sec or even 15 sec videos as practice, heck why not try 6 sec. See how much story you can pack into that small space. It will be less daunting and when you get to doing longer videos you'll have a much better idea of what is actually needed...and you'll have hopefully formed a loyal crew that likes working with you.

You could also post to social media sites like Vine, Twitter or Instagram to get fast feedback and is maybe less time consuming as doing YouTube...although you could post there as well. Depending on your age you might have to have your parents set up accounts for you...not sure what the age limit is and I can't remember how old I was in middle school.

Alright! I'll try!
There are a few problems though;
1) My parents don't know what I want to do when I grow up, and I don't plan on telling them any sooner (although this isn't much of a problem to me)
2) How do I convince my friends into following my lead? I'm not known as someone who orders, so this would be hard to record with my friends
3) In where I live, we're not allowed to bring electronics like phones or cameras to school, which is another problem

If you're afraid your parents won't let you, then try asking them if you can try out a new hobby. As far as friends, just ask them if they want to help you make a short movie on a weekend or after school at your house. The beauty of filmmaking is that it is collaborative, so don't order your friends around, instead get them to give suggestions and input and make it a team effort. The more you organize the shoots and put things together the more they will see you as a leader.

When I shoot projects I try to surround myself with people I think are better than me and then attempt to get as many suggestions from them as I can or when I get stuck. It makes people like working with you and also makes you look better.

Okay, so, now the problem is that I still barely have any time that can be spared for this, and barely anyone is taking this seriously
And btw, what editing software should I use?

Unfortunately filmmaking takes up a massive amount of time. you could practice doing montages to get your cinematography down. For editing software, start with free software. GoPro has a free software for editing, also check out Hit Film and BlackMagic Divinci Resolve Lite (all free, the second two are much harder to use)

I understand that filmmaking takes a massive amount of time, in which I don't really mind. For now, I'll try getting the right software and find a time and place to record

Hey, I haven't been making any progress at all ;(

I haven't even told my friends about the filming idea, merely because I'm too shy to tell them about it

Harder to use does often times mean more advanced, sometimes that is a good thing in the fact you have more control. But if you don't know how to use the tools going a little more simple will give you a good foundation before you move up to the more advanced software.

Have you tried just saying, "I want to make a movie, are you interested in helping?" Have your script and ideas ready so it doesn't take them much work to be involved then just ask.

Well, I've tried. I've tried asking the people I'm closest to as well as the people who are most likely interested. But well, everyone I know just simply doesn't support my idea and just doesn't believe I can do this in the future.
I'm not saying I'm giving up though, maybe now's just not the time...

Do you have your script and ideas ready? How many people did you ask and who were they? Did you show them the script? How old are you?
