I bought the student edition of the production premium suite (after effects, photoshop, flash, premiere pro, encore, sound booth, encoder and more!) for about 450 and I never looked back. after effects is easy and very powerful to use. i refer to tv.adobe.com for useful tutorials as well as creativecow.net maltaannon.com and videocopilot.net. good youtube tutorials for when you've got a hold of how to use it are corridordigital and freddiew2
go ahead and download the trial to see if you like it or if it's too detailed for what you're hoping to achieve. Also if you get just AE you don't get the dynamic link (direct connection between all adobe products, no need to render to add to other editing program) and it's only 100 dollars more to get over 2000 dollars worth of software, totally worth it.
