What's a good camera?

I'm looking to pick up a digital camera but really I'm not sure what to look for in one. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get or what features to look for in a camera? I'm looking for something in a low to medium price range but that can be a bit flexible.

I'm looking at probably around $200, MAYBE $250 if it makes a big difference - is this a realistic range?

not really. unless you are going to rent for a day. i don't know any camera that is worth using as a paper weight for that. you might check on ebay. you are talking about digital video, right?
