What why and who.

This is a funny thing, It may be of use to other beginners.
When I started to make the short film I'm working on I had no idea how to go about it.
So I started with what the cahacters did.
After a bit of learning I figured out that I needed to know why they did it.
Finally in order to get the interactions correct I needed to know who they where.
I had no idea when I started that it would pan out this way.
So you hear people say that you need conflict in every scene.
As it turns out, conflict is just waiting to come to the surface when you know who your characters are and why they see the world in slightly different ways.

"Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?"

"Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?"

That's cool.
What caught my eye about your post was the subject line, "What why and who".

My world is naturally and comfortably almost always about the "Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?"

It is good to apply this not only for writing and creative writing, but communications in general (written, verbal, email, in-person, phone). It's one of those simple and basic things that we don't necessarily think about or dissect. But it's there in what we do - or, if it's not, sometimes we have to make sure that it's there :)

What about "motive"?

"Motive" is "why" mixed in with "who".

So what causes actions?

Is it the "why" or the "Who"?

Perhaps they are one in the same?

There was a line on the Silence of the Lambs..

LECTER:
" First principles, Clarice. Simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing ask: what is it in itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this man you seek?"

In this (unusual?) case it is the "desire" of the deviant that drives his actions.

So could I figure out how my characters will react in each situation by thinking about what they desire?
Maybe.
