Hi guys,

long time reader, first time poster.

I'd like to edit my movies using a TV (I think I'll get a 17" Philips HD ready) as second monitor. I'd like it to show the preview of the film, not the timeline or anything else.

Can it be done with Premiere Pro 2.0? My graphic card is a NVIdia GeForce Go 7300.

Thanks in advance,
Stefano

Well, Im not sure, i'm not familiar with your graphics card. But 2.0 should work, it all depends on the graphics card. If you can somehow hook the TV into the computer as a second monitor, you should able to adjust your monitor settings by right clicking on your desktop and going to properties and then settings. Once you change the settings, your desktop should be able to extend on to the tv, as if the tv was the right half of your screen. This way, you can just adjust all the windows in premiere pro and just drak your monitor window over to the right screen. I've done this before with my old graphics card, it was a bit janky but it was cool. -Daniel

I am using a laptop that has the GForce Go 7600 and the HDMI out to a Dell monitor worked exactly as you want it to. I actually changed it so that I could extend the Premier Pro workspace into the Dell so that it it holds both the source and the timeline display.

The only drawback is that the colour accuracy of any consumer television is even worse than the Dell 2405 so you will probably end up fiddling with it a lot to try and get it to show even a close approximation of the colour you should be seeing.

With my setup, I used a Spyder Optical to calibrate my laptop display and then spent about three hours trying to get the Dell to match it as close as possible. The display is still darker than I would like and has a definite red shift to the colours... but as long as I keep that in mind I can do journeyman work with the setup.

In Final Cut, there's options to use video outs to connect to a TV and display the monitor, but in Premiere Pro, the only way to do this is to use a camera plugged in via Firewire. Basically, you need to plug your camera into your computer however you normally capture video, then set it to VCR mode, stop or eject any tapes in it, then use your camcorder's video out to connect to a T.V. There's some option in preferences to preview video/audio on external display that activates this. I usually just preview on my computer screen, I only use this feature when I'm previewing a film for friends in my room and I want something bigger to show them on.

I haven't checked this post in a while, sorry if I haven't answered yet... I think I'll use my Canon XM2 as "firewire bridge" to the external monitor: it works, and for now I'll use that. I think I'll edit in SD and then put it in HD via EDL or proxy.

Thanks for answering :)

P.S. I know the color gamma is awful, I'll use a CRT 20" monitor to do that... It's a great monitor I had the chance to use on set and it works brilliantly.
