Tripods

I've been looking on ebay and such for tripods. If I buy a tripod for a certain camera, is the tripod compatible with other cameras? Or would I have to get different panheads for different brand cameras? And can any panhead go on any tripod, that is basically equipped to carry approximately the same weight camera?

In terms of using the tripod with different cameras, it's basically down to the weight it can support and the mounting screws. At the low end all cheap cameras seem to have precisely the same mounting holes, or if you're paying a few hundred dollars for a tripod then they'll probably be adjustable anyway.
