Time coding

Hey

I am a soundy and I get timecoding for audio and I understand why it is valuable, but I don't get how film and video get time coded?

I was on a shoot last weekend and the sound guy used a digital clapper to send the time code being generated to his laptop where he was encoding it into the audio - thats all fine, easy to understand. However, there seemed to be no link between the Arri camera and the clapper. Was the film not being time coded, or does film automatically timecode itself, or does film not get time coded but a time code gets applied to the digitized footage in post? Or is it something completely different?

Any info would be great - cheers
