Special Effects - I don't know where to start...

Hi,

I am a software developer who always wanted to learn about using special effects for video. I am talking about ones used for Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, etc.
What books or software should I purchase?
I am thinking about Adobe's Premiere software.

Adobe premiere, Flash 8, 3ds max or maya should be a good place to start in the line special effects but it takes lot of learning in order to use these applications so i would read up on the ethical part of special effects before you start spending cash on something you may never use cause the software is really expensive.
