Self contained movies - why several files?

when i export my projects as a self-contained movie it creates several files, like project.mov, and then project.mov2 etc... these files are referenced each other and you cant use them as intended, as a single self-contained file.

so instead of ending up with a single .mov file, i end up with 5 or 6 files, my project is around 56mins long.

My bet is you're not using an OS X formatted hard drive. FAT (not an Apple format) formatted drives have a 2GB or so file limit, and will break up files like that. What is the size of all those files you end up with? What is the format of the drive you're saving them to?
