S16 field of view/focal lengths

Hi there,

I am about to work on my first S16 Short this summer and just wanted to check if I've got my understanding of S16 focal lengths/field of view correct.
Ive only shot on 35mm film before and the director and I want to use a range of lenses that would be comparable to 20mm-100mm if shot on 35mm. If i have it right, to get the same field of view on S16 I would need to use lenses in the range of 10mm-50mm. Is this right, and does it apply to S16 specific lenses?

Thanks

George

You are correct. It's a little more like 9mm-45mm, but close enough. Just remember that because you are using a shorter focal length for the same lens angle the depth of field increases. You probably already know that, but... Best of luck!

With 16mm, you half the focal lengths of 35mm to figure out what lens you're working with. For example, whereas a 50mm lens is baseline for 35mm cinematography, a 25mm lens is baseline for 16mm. If you wanted a 25mm lens in 16mm equivelent, you'd want to find one that was about 12.5mm...
