Quick Tip: A Matter of Velcro

When heading out on that next location shoot make sure to stop at your nearest office supply store and pick up some cable strap Velcro. These are the kind that have a loop at one end with hoops all down one side, and hooks down the other. Yes they are very good for organizing your cables but they can also do much more. Need some gaffers tape? Just loop a roll with two of these Velcro straps onto your belt loop and it’s easy on, easy off with the gaffers and anything else you need.

Another plus is they are a great warning bell that someone is pulling on a cable. Velcro makes that very distinct ripping sound when being pulled apart. For example, you are on a run and gun shoot with you and a boom mic wired into your camera. Use some Velcro to strap off the cable onto your hip so if your boom operator pulls to hard you’ll have an audio cue to know someone is about to pull your rig right out of your hands!

Other applications:

1. SET DRESSING, for tying up loose curtains, or hanging an extra pot in the kitchen for that perfect shot.
2. PEN HOLDER, (Use loop on one end to secure pen to Velcro)
3. SIGN HANGERS, instead of tape, (Reusable and non marking)
4. ORGANIZING GEAR, Strap different colors onto bags to coordinate equipment, (Red-lighting, Blue-camera gear, Green-Snacks!)

I could go on and on. Suffice it to say a little Velcro can go a long way!
