All writers come across writing hurdles. I write everyday and come across challenges every day. Being that the writer's chair could sometimes become a very lonely place, wouldn't it be fun to share some of our writing hurdles here?

When you come to a stopping point, please check in here, and share with us what brought you to a stopping point.

Maybe we can help!

Then, drop back in to tell us what helped you to overcome the obstacle.

Sound fun?

(P.S. I will be checking in here very often. I hope that I'm not the only one!)

Here goes... What I experienced today was something that I'd never catch myself experiencing... I just didn't know how to start writing what I wanted to start writing. Not sure what came over me. I sat in front of my computer for an hour, found excuses around my desk, reasons not to start writing. And this was a very painful feeling.

How I overcame this, and finally finished my project... I literally had to force myself to start writing, and thought, "Just start writing, write anything, write badly... Just start..."

So I wrote for about 2 hours straight, and hated absolutely EVERYTHING that came out from my fingertips typing. But said to myself, I must get passed this - I will probably hate this for 2 more hours.

In the end it took me about 4 hours to finish my project, and I was very happy with the finished product. The first trick was getting started and "writing" no matter how painful (or scared). The second was accepting that the rough draft will suck - majorly suck - but I had to go through that process... in order to get to the finish line.

the 12th hour

the 12th hour

what brought me to a stopping point lastnight: working for 12 hours straight, without having stepped outside for a breath of fresh air. i took a few breaks thru-out the day, but stayed indoors. at the 12th hour, i just got bored with anything that i brainstormed or wrote down.

what did i do to get to writing again? simply ended my work day, so i could come in fresh in the morning (with a nice, tall travelling mug of fresh-brewed iced coffee and a freshly baked H&H blueberry bagel, yum).

I get like that all the time. I get lazy and make any excuse I can get not to write. Like now for instance, I'm on the boards and not writing anything at all. I have Final Draft open, just sitting there.

Well, sometimes writing on boards or even blogs can get the creative juices flowing. When I used to have my own Blogger blog for random, poetic hypermusings (7 years ago), I soon found that every single post that I made had something it in - a story idea, a lyric idea - something that I could use, and it was that activity of blogging on my blog that got me to writing stuff that I found interesting for myself. This was during a time when, for some reason, the black-and-white marble composition book was just not cutting it anymore.

Maybe when something like a brand-new, black-and-white marble composition book or freshly booted Final Draft project file is staring you dead in the face, it's a lot of pressure to be expected to just flip a switch on and be fabulous, typing away. But then again, probably because that's not what writing is.
