New technologies: Digital distribution

So what's really happening with digital cinema? Does anybody know whether any companies have actually invested in digital systems? I know that the Madstone's chain tried, but they went bankrupt (not necessarily because of the digital technology, though).

And what impact do you think digital distribution would have for filmmakers?

Digital distribution is already happening...
Most of it, however, is small time independent film distributing their work over the internet & via local/internet DVD sales.

Derek -- you're absolutely right. And that's a whole other great topic to discuss here.

But how about wide-scale theatrical digital distribution? When it finally arrives -- and it will -- do you think it will actually open up opportunity for indie filmmakers, or will the big companies still control what goes into theaters?

It won't really change... for many reasons...
mostly having to do with the larger distributors and the contracts they have with movie houses...
However, the digital presentation in theaters is coming... but rather slowly... we'll still be watching plastic 35mm projected for our amusement into the next decade.

Can't wait for the digital revolution to hit all theaters though!

I am thinking we start some kind of online distribution

i am thinking somthing like setting it up so that anyone with a film could give us a small percentage and we sell it online for them through a store like the one we have here on studentfilmmakersforums.com.
