Music score

Hi all,
i shall be doing my first short in a while.
I have experience in NLE. Up till now, i edited my footage having the musical piece ready.
For this short, i will have original music created for me.
How should I instruct the musician to write his score?
The movie is around 15 mins.
Should I tell him, that I want for example, @ the 3rd minute to build up, etc etc?
Ambienty n blah blah?

How should we collaborate on that?

You should give him the film as is and let him go with it. The relationship between directors and composers is one that has to be established early on. A balance of trust and understanding has to exist. Just give him free reign over the prject, then put the music to the project. Watch it, sit down and take notes, and then watch it with your composer and tell him what you think it needs. But for now, just let him go.
