Hi there,

I am looking for a story that should contain maximum of 2 characters and for minimum of 50secs. I got to make a 3d animation short film. I thought of my characters as futuristic Pirate and may be a robot. Want it to be funny.

Kindly help me out to develop my story.

Thanks...

A pirate "and" a robot? (As your 2 characters?)

Or, is it, 2 pirates that are robots?

(Coincidence that your 3 replies back are all asking for more details about your characters, but the reason is, your story starts with your characters, and your characters basically write your plot.)

May I ask why you chose a pirate/robot kind of image? Is it just something you've always wanted to design as a designer/artist and you would find this image visually pleasing and unique? Or, is this for a class or contest, and they threw 2 random things at you to work with? :) (Or, other?)

For something fast and 50 seconds -

I would see what you could sketch up with the "Tom and Jerry" route with your storyline.

For example:

With all the Tom and Jerry cartoons, it's basically the same plot, which is, the cat always wants to chase the mouse (with deep and angry but comical passion), and the mouse always wants to get away (but not without seriously humiliating the cat first, whether deliberate or accidental).

Sidenote: It's been many years since I've watched Tom and Jerry back-to-back, so correct me if i'm wrong. It's a love-hate relationship, right? And the above is correct?

So apply to your story the following:

Choose a very predictable storyline defined by your characters' human nature [ or animal nature or programmed machine nature :) ], and "show don't tell" while using "cause-effect-consequences" as a tool to create your scenes.

So how would you do this with 1 pirate and 1 robot as your 2 characters? They're not exactly stereotypical opposites or stereotypical enemies (like a cat and mouse), where the objectives and battles are obvious and eternal (in a stereotypical world).

But an idea is to always have the pirate after some kind of treasure. That's his ongoing and eternal goal. He's always after stealing someone else's goods, money, and gold (in a futuristic world, in your case), and will keep trying different ways at it...

Punish that behaviour in different ways that are humorous, (using Tom and Jerry as your boilerplate or skeleton). Anyway, you wouldn't want to reward ruthless pirate nature, would you? And regardless of the ways he suffers the consequences of his actions, the pirate just keeps going and going, keeps on trying, and keeps on failing. And his punishments are always amusing to watch... (After all, you'd rather see the bad guy get punished for his bad actions, right? And the nice guy always has a guardian angel and/or "brains" over brawn.)

You could throw a twist to the robot, like- although it's a futuristic world, for some reason, he just opted out of getting all the necessary upgrades and virus protection~ and so the robot has all these glitches, needs to reboot all the time, and maybe gets blue-screen on his face once in a while. When the robot looks like he's weak, this is when the pirate always goes for the attack, thinking it's an easy victory. "But it's just not."

Thanks a lot... That would help me in order to create a story....
About my chracter My Pirate would be more of a humanoid type.....

character building

character building

oh, ok, a pirate humanoid. here's another idea then, taking into consideration you have 2 pirate humanoids to work with. have the 50-second short be like 2 pirate humanoid guys showing off to each other who has the most meanest baddest artillery "on their bodies" - like they have a futuristic, heavy artillery transforming hook or peg leg, etc. It becomes a pissing match between the 2 characters. It's a tool to help showcase your creativity in character building and character designing, and being able to show that you can build characters based on what they are - for example, you're not going to have 2 pirates doing non-pirate type things. In fact, you can milk it more to the point that it becomes outrageous and fantastical because they are futuristic. Futuristic and sci-fi decreases your limitations with characters. Showcase our creativity in taking parts of what a pirate is, and making it futuristic and sci-fi. Then, keep the storyline basic: what do pirates always like to do? They're always in a continuous journey for treasure, and they like stealing and conquering other ships. I think they like parrots, skulls, women, and rum, too.

Ok , I have an idea for you.

If you use it you should put me down in the credits as co thinker.

It's a flat bit of sea.

Two robot pirates have been cast adrift in a lifeboat.

They are troublemakers and look odd, but have pirate clothes on..not in great condition.

They no longer get on, as they have been adrift for way too long.

THey both stare out to sea, no wind, the boat creaks , the waves lap at the boat.

A fish jumps up and back in to the water.

THe bots are grumpy and they eye eachother up with a sideways glance.

The camera drifts around to reveal large red "off buttons" in the back of the each robot.

One robot is distracted by a gull.

As he looks atthe gull, the other robot quietly reaches for his off button, but quickly withdraws his arm as the distraction is gone.

He turns back around just too slowly to see what his friend had been trying.

the other Bot is then distracted by an insect...same deal..off button ...missed chance..etc etc.

THis goes on ...fade out .. pan up...whatever,.. to indicate time passing.

New day.

One robot gets caught! , his off button is hit!...other robot is very pleased.

Next scene shows winning Bot zooming along with an outboard motor made from the parts of the slower robot.

Wide shot to show he is nearly at a small island robot port where lots of robot sin is going on drinking ..dancing...ect. sunset behind island..

Maybe you might not do the last part scene...it is a lot of work for not muchbang.
