Lighting Rain

Simple question, any tips on how to light a scene taking place in the rain? We have a crude rain machine and using a consumer sony mini-dv cam and been having problems to get the rain to look right in the frame. Any tips or angles any has ever experienced or perhaps a better substance than water to capture light? Thanks.

The key is to backlight the rain, and to place against a dark background. This will help make the rain stand out.

Also, play with changing the size and frequency of the drops as best you can.
