Lighting Rain

Simple question, any tips on how to light a scene taking place in the rain? We have a crude rain machine and using a consumer sony mini-dv cam and been having problems to get the rain to look right in the frame. Any tips or angles any has ever experienced or perhaps a better substance than water to capture light? Thanks.

Rain just needs to be backlit or crosslit to be seen. You really don't want to mess with adding milk or paint to the water...
