hey guys,
i've posted here before asking for feedback and I'm back again for more.

I am creating my own digital muzzle flashes for my sci-fi/horror film, Deployment Strategy. The visual style is supposed to have an exaggerated, comic book feel to it, but not so much that when you watch it, the fakeness leaps out at you. basically want to maintain a suspension of disbelief.

What do you think of this shot? I actually liked it a lot when I was done, but then a friend of mine who understands what I'm trying to do said it was way too fake.

Please let me know what you think!!! Does it need toning down?

btw, the final version will have ejected shell casings flying out to complete the effect

Hey Mark,

I think it's amazing what you're doing with the film.

The muzzle flash seems too big and too pointy. Also, I think it could use a bit more color (though that may be an artifact of compression). Maybe adding a hint of red.

ok.. if you want your gun shots to be seemless with your film, here are a few things which I notice offhand.

When the shot goes off, the camera is stable... makes it easy to see the comp. Ok thats the small thing, I'm not saying, add shaky cam to it, but if you have enough pixels to sacrafice, do it :P

AND THE BIG THING that will turn this effect "REAL!" or near it is by applying some type of specular flash in your frame to SHOW that when the gun fires, a flash of light apears out of the mussle, but also it generates a new light source that creates shadows, and etc... If your still in the process of shooting these types of scenes, maybe think of having a flash that can support rapid firing. Like a still camera flash with a capasitor large enough to hold several charges.... etc

this will enhance your shots dramaticly OH and debree! dont even forget small particles are cool. I know you said you were gona add shells... thats gona be cool, but other stuff in the air... WELL have fun
