Homemade crane

i have always been interested in film but have never really had the time to do the projects that ive thought up. now i do and i realize that i need a crane to do many shots. i was wondering if anyone knows where i can find some plans to make a crane from home depot or buy one cheap. i would really prefer to make it on my own and every site i have found wants you to buy the plans. does anyone know of a website where i can find free plans for making a crane or do i have to give in and cough up some cash? thanks in advance

A lot of the low end cranes are just junk. No better (or worse) than something you might build yourself. Some of the keys are rigidity and weight. The cheap cranes are made of all steel and if you use your camera tripod for a mount, you've overloaded it and it becomes unstable. The last think you need is an accident. Build a crane arm from aluminum and mount it on a heavy duty lightstand, not a weak folding kit stand.
