I saw gravity tonight. I really enjoyed this movie. It is a movie of congruent time, space and personality contrasts in somewhat of an underlying emotional 3D form as well as a 3D visual effects movie that actually works well as a story telling techniue. Clooney is the faithful calm cool collect Matt Kowalski a veteran astraunaout on his last trip to space and Sandra Bullock plays the lost fearful out of control and hysterical Newbie Ryan Stone who is on her first trip to space after a 6 month training program. Ryan is dealing with past inner demons that in the beginning hold her back and then become a driving force at a spiritual turning point for her character. She goes from lost to faith with an I am going to make it out of this if I at all possibly can attitude. The space craft’s tight claustrophobic interiors contrast with the depths of space wide open exteriors. The 3D scenes of the inside of the space capsules don't pull you out of the story like so many 3D movies but instead you subtlety feel the tug in the most wonderful way. Instead of pulling you out the 3D effects are pulling you into the story and helping you to relate. Lighting and photography are superb and the shots of Bullock at the turning point brought out toughness or hardness in her face and in her character from victim to heroin. That difference in her look was photographically highlighted from an angle that I haven’t seen of Bullock before making her look harder but fresh smart and believable. Special effects are flawless. The space walking special effects and choreography are impeccably coordinated and beautifully edited. Great Movie.
