For 2D work I doubt it really matters: picture quality is going to be more important than performance when any half-decent modern graphics card can fill the screen with 2D graphics thousands of times a second.
I don't know if it's still true, but Matrox have traditionally been considered to provide the best 2D picture quality, but with only slow 3D performance... at least to the extent that Matrox fans seem to be pretty dedicated to the brand.
